Virtual Reality in the Future

The Future

To be able to reduce problems with the VR headset with its effects on people's health, we would have to make the VR headset more easy on the eyes and head. By making it better for human health, we have thought about ar glasses that will be connected by a neck pillow with the systems inside. This headset comes with two VR controllers that are going to be used for the VR part. The neck pillow is to help the comfortability that the VR headset has been struggling with and having the system inside of the neck pillow can help with some of the problems that haven't been solved. The neck pillow is designed to hold the vr system because we had seen that a lot of neck problems happen with the headset being on the face. The material that's going to surround our system is going to be Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) which is heat resistant. Surrounding the PTFE is going to be fabric to comfort the user when using. This is meant to comfort the user while using our device and to help with neck pain. There will be an audio jack for wired headphones and bluetooth for users that prefer that over wired. The glasses will be able to switch from ar to vr with a camera shutters (on the glasses) when switching modes. The glasses are to be an improvement from the vr headset since the headset would cause eye strain as well as some muscle strain. The glasses are there for a display and to not push the user. The ar glasses will still be able to connect with other systems to display what they connect the ar glasses with. The controllers of the VR headset will be the same design as a normal VR controller which is a hand held controller with buttons and a joystick. These buttons and joysticks help the user walk around and play with items in virtual reality. These controllers will connect with the vr headset with bluetooth and interact with the virtual world while connected. These controllers will be powered with double A batteries instead of a wire. The hardware of the headset will use the newest gpu for these types of devices today, the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2. This will be used as an example for now since it's expected to get an even better gpu in the future. Why the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 is good is because it targets more into a better gaming environment/experience.

Breakthroughs

As Virtual Reality, and technology as a whole, are an ever-evolving subject, there will naturally be new advancements. Logically, there are going to be some necessary for the future VR headset design. One of the big advancements that is desired is the further innovation of the Snapdragon XR2 processor. Though it is already a new technology, we as humans are always looking for the next step, and larger processing power would always be a positive for creating a better product. Another innovation the headset would require is lightness while retaining strength and comfortability. The design will wrap around the user's head, and will have moving parts in the lens shutters and tightening band, so to maintain comfortability, the headset should be light to prevent strain, but using quality materials to maintain strength and durability. The innovation the design is looking for to meet these qualifications is light, durable plastics and small, usable electronics that don't create a sizable and unwieldy product. Parts of the planned future technology don't exist today due to the constant innovation of durable materials whilst making them smaller, more reliable, and still maintaining their functionality. One of the required breakthroughs for the design are retractable shutters that are fitted over the lenses. This would require shutters not dissimilar to those of a camera, but they would need to fit the design of the frames of the headset without adding too much weight. This would require measurements of the frames of the glasses, testing different types of materials for the shutters and creating a housing that fits the shutters. In order to test this design, it would be necessary to prototype small shutters that are not contained on all sides. The shutters would need to open and close completely while maintaining a flat face against the lenses

Consequences

While our device enhances the current VR technology to make it better, there are still some negative consequences as well as good consequences that come from this. Our device is made to ensure that comfort is taken care of and ensured to keep users from developing health problems. We want people to stay healthy and well, which results in better posture and better mental health. More good consequences that come from our device is the fact they it's very interactive and social, meaning that the content never stops. You can play a variety of games as well as enjoy a variety of apps and activities. Now while we did our best to make our device the best in the business, we know that there are still some negative consequences that are a little trickier to solve. A negative consequence that stems from our device is that just like any other video game or technological device, you shouldn't spend all your time on it as having a social life in person is quite important for a person's development. Another negative consequence that needs to be worked on and improved is the usage of technology. While most users would use our device for gaming and entertainment, we know that our device can be misused in ways that we never intended for. These misused ways can range from cyberbullying to gathering information about other people from socials. A negative consequence that is both a pro and a con is our moving parts. Our device is utilized to its full potential to give users the best experience they could possibly receive from VR. But because we have so many parts that work together and move to create our wonderful device, it might be more prone to break or at least have more technical issues.
